In 1892, an Episcopal Bishop of Massachusetts named William Lawrence argued that: “In the long run, it is only to the man of morality that wealth comes. Godliness is in league with riches.” I’ve read a lot of books about anything that sparked my curiosity, but this quote was a deep discovery. A reality slap for those, like me, that have been subjected to the tyranny of their own imagination. He was known as “the banker bishop” because of his wealth and successful fund-raising drives. Even J. P. Morgan, Jr. served as treasurer of the Church Pension Fund from its founding in 1918.

From the discovery of his story, we could recognize him, at least, as a “peculiar” character. An interesting mix between what faith and wealth means.

This mix makes part of what I understand as true faith clash. I believed that true faith, Christianity and much of any religious belief was “to help the needy”. I deeply felt that power, money and wealth had no place in the equation. So I assume that Lawrence would not completely agree with my beliefs.
